Rural Immersion Site: Quesnel

Quesnel

The Town

A pretty city with a history of gold fever has something to offer everyone. Quesnel has a population of approximately 12,000 residents and 25,000 people in the surrounding area.

Gold fever has long been a tourist attraction to the area. If you haven’t had the pleasure of Billy Barker Days or Barkerville, you won’t be disappointed.

Quesnel is a city with all the great things that rural life has to offer.  The city has great access to the outdoors and affordable housing.   Foodies will be delighted with all the fabulous restaurants as well.

The Clinical Experience

Quesnel is the largest site available in the Rural Immersion Program. The experience in Quesnel provides residents with a nice mix of rural family medicine where GP’s still have multiple different roles and responsibilities as well as higher volume.

The Quesnel Hospital is a 42 bed facility including medical/surgical inpatient unit, ICU, ER, OR and LDR. There are 15-20 practicing GPs, GP anesthesia, internal medicine, general surgery, ENT, OBGYN, and psychiatry all in one house. There is a low student to staff doctor ratio which allows for lots of excellent hands-on clinical experience.

There is a wide spectrum of community services including wound care, urgent primary care, home supports, OT and PT.

We know you will have a fabulous experience with our fabulous team of professionals.

The Community

There is so much to do in this small city, you won’t be bored. There are festivals,  vast walking trails,  mountain bike trails,  beautiful lakes minutes from town, multiple gyms, plenty of parks and a river walk right downtown.

If you want a cultural experience, take a day trip to Barkerville and Wells. There is so much to see and do that one trip is never enough. Try your hand at gold panning or take in the fabulous food.

The medical community here loves connecting with learners. If you ever want to try something new there is always someone willing for you to join them.

If you are a foodie, you won’t be disappointed with the more than 20 restaurant options.  You can also look forward to Billy Barker Days where there is always food and fun activities to take in.

Quesnel has a great small community feel with many of the amenities of a city.
